The benefits of trees in our cities are well-established. Trees are linked with better health outcomes, help mitigate the urban heat-island effect and can help lower energy bills. Their presence has also been known to raise property values.

But trees and their benefits for neighbourhoods is a complicated picture. A new study published in PLOS ONE offers a provocative look at which neighbourhoods are most likely to have urban tree canopy cover. Money may not grow on trees, the authors write, but that’s not the end of the story.
