Hames Sharley was chosen by Indian Railways from a pool of 250 international firms to prepare a concept for the development of a new rail station and major commercial, retail, residential, civic and public infrastructure in New Delhi. The 116 hectare rail yard sits adjacently to Delhi’s CBD, Connaught Place. The project consisted of a mixed use development of approximately 1 million sqm of total building area, some of which were to be located on a deck above the rail tracks. Provision was made for a new rail station able to accommodate 100,000 people at any one time in the world’s largest railway system. The impact on public infrastructure and road networks was a significant issue.
