The State Performing Arts Centre, also known as Centre stage was a two stage design competition to design a new performing arts venue in the heart of the Central Business district of Perth, Western Australia. The $42M theatre complex design comprised of a 575 seat proscenium theatre, a 200 seat ‘black box’ studio theatre, informal external performance spaces, retail outlets and cafes. In the Centre Stage project, an urban ribbon weaved through the site, shaping the form of the building.  It is a louvered screen, a gateway, a sign. It bursts through the block boundaries forming large cantilevers. It signals the presence of something different, exciting and to be explored.
