Newman, WA

Newman has no town centre. An area as big as the Perth CBD has evolved in an ad-hoc manner since the 1960s. A collection of buildings including the shopping centre, various commercial premises, a hotel and swimming pool are surrounded by neglected, unused spaces and parking areas. The vision for the town centre focused on creating a new network of legible, safe and climatically comfortable streets and spaces. Activities such as a café, outdoor play area and performance area were identified as desirable and a new community centre and child care centre were included in the plan.

Adjustments to lot boundaries and creation of new road reserves were part of the vision to create a new heart for Newman with a unique character reflecting the stories of the town.

This project involved the preparation of a master plan that focused on creating a new network of legible, safe and climatically comfortable streets and spaces. Adjustments to lot boundaries and the creation of new road reserves were part of the vision to create a new heart for Newman.
