This award-winning project provided the framework for the development of a mariculture industry based on growing Pacific Oysters in South Australia’s West Coast region near Ceduna. The project assessed the capability of the near-shore environment to support the farming of Pacific Oysters in commercial quantities and of a quality suitable for Australian domestic consumption. The principal method involved data captured from Landsat TM imagery to determine the thermal signature of shallow water bays that could provide optimum environments for a future mariculture industry. This was cutting edge technology at the time and the first occasion that remote imagery had been used as a planning application.
Now well-known as Thevenard or Ceduna Oysters, the pioneering work carried out by Hames Sharley has resulted in a thriving mariculture industry to complement the fishery and resource development in the region.
