Concrete produces 5% of global CO2 emissions – as much as the entire country of Russia produces annually. It’s one of the dirtiest industrial processes on the planet.

Recent research suggests that when it comes to concrete, we can do better. Franz-Josef Ulm, director of MIT’s Concrete Sustainability Hub, says stronger materials allow engineers to make do with less cement, potentially achieving the same construction goals while dropping CO2 emissions by 60%.
