Cleaning the still-polluted canals and smaller rivers in England has remained in the ‘too-hard basket’ until a not-for-profit environment group, the Canal and River Trust, came up with a clever innovation. Using technology developed by Biomatrix Water, man-made islands are filtering out the industrial effluent and sewage from the river system. An abundance of dragonfly larvae and the diversification of plant species from three to 30 is evidence of its success.
