Last week the architectural community of WA came together to celebrate design excellence at the Australian Institute of Architects WA Awards. Two Hames Sharley projects took home prestigious named awards, representing the highest honour in their nominated categories.

Curtin Heritage Living Cottesloe Redevelopment was recognised with the top honour for heritage architecture, The Margaret Pitt Morison Award. The heritage restoration of the 1897 built Wearne Hostel was completed by Griffiths Architects with interiors and space planning by Hames Sharley. GKA was the concept and initial design architect, with SPH. Hames Sharley was also responsible for the detailed design, construction, and delivery of the new buildings.

In their citation, the heritage judges noted that the redevelopment enhanced the Wearne Hostel’s heritage values while providing modern aged care facilities.

“The project heritage architects conserved the Wearne Hostel’s Federation Queen Anne style and integrated new residential accommodations, community spaces, and amenities, demonstrating a commitment to heritage and community benefit.”

The project also received an Award for Urban Design, celebrating the dignified, connected environment that enriches both residents’ lives and Cottesloe. Over half of the site is dedicated to open space, providing public parkland and gardens with about a third of the site accessible to pedestrians. The development also saw the introduction of a highly acclaimed restaurant, art gallery and medical centre at street level, integrating the development within the Cottesloe community.

Arup Workplace Perth/Boorloo

Continuing its successful streak of award recognition, Arup Workplace Perth/Boorloo has received The Julius Elischer Award for Interior Architecture. The collaboration between Hames Sharley, Arup and Peter Farmer Designs also received a Commendation for Sustainable Architecture, reflecting the comprehensive regenerative, sustainable and cultural principles embedded throughout the project’s design and delivery.

“The Arup Workplace project is a compelling example of the power of early, thoughtful, and meaningful stakeholder engagement. Every element of the design has been executed with a clear commitment to the project’s core values,” the interiors citation noted.

“The result is truly innovative, culturally respectful, and a genuinely sustainable interior – creating a generous workplace that is inspiring for its users.”

Hames Sharley WA Studio Leader, Derek Hays said the awards reflect the team’s holistic expertise in Interior Design, Architecture, and Urban Design.

“It’s a fantastic outcome that celebrates the diverse talent within our team. It’s also the direct result of successful partnerships with like-minded collaborators to create exceptional places that change the way people live.”

Congratulations to all our collaborators – Curtin Heritage Living, Griffiths Architects, GKA, SPH, ARUP and Peter Farmer Designs – and to all the other award winners on the night!
